Symbolism

Like many artists, I like to use repeated symbols within my prints. I wanted to pay a quick homage to one of my recurring images: scissors.

I have been playing with this idea for many years, often in more graphic and disturbing ways! The image below is one that I regularly came back to:

I stopped including scissors for a while- I could only seem to draw them destroying things or severing limbs- as you do! However, a few years ago I was gifted this beautiful book, Little Women. I loved the front cover.

I like the juxtaposition of scissors: creating and destroying at the same time. There is something threatening and familiar about these every day objects.

My latest print: Bathtime Blues, shows the instruments floating gently on the water- like sharks surrounding her. She is safe, but there is an air of danger.
